Because of the continuing difficulties in holding large meetings and following government advice, the Committee has decided to cancel the remaining lectures and events for 2020. Please go to our News Page for a full transcript of the letter.
This message was sent to all Full and Waiting List members in July 2020..
I hope you are all safe and well and, despite the restrictions placed upon us, enjoying the summer.
Your Committee, in conjunction with advice from The Arts Society and Government guidance, has been considering the options with regard to the remainder our 2020 Programme. However, I regret to say that given the current restrictions and the fact that it is anticipated that large meetings will be subject to restrictions for quite some time, we have decided to cancel our Lecture and Visits Programme for the rest of 2020.
A number of Societies have moved over to virtual and internet-based meetings. However, given the high proportion of our members who are not familiar with the internet or have poor internet connections, this is not a viable approach for our Society and so we intend to resume our current monthly lecture format when we re-start.
To facilitate the possibility of a rapid restart in 2021, the savings from cancelled events this year will be used to pay The Arts Society 2021 Affiliation Fee. This means our Society will remain affiliated to The Arts Society during 2021 and our Members will continue to receive the magazine and other written correspondence. Those of you who are familiar with the internet will also be able to access the substantial quantity of digital material produced by the Arts Society. The Tenterden Society will continue to send our local newsletters and other information to those who have internet access.
We shall begin planning for 2021 later this year when we have a clearer view of the likely restrictions facing meetings of our size and only if we have an elected Committee. A membership fee for 2021 will be fixed when the programme is published and you will be advised when payment is due.
The Annual General Meeting will take place by post and internet on 2nd November this year. As a transitional arrangement, the present Committee has agreed to remain in post until after the re-start. However, several members will be retiring and, so, to ensure the future of the Society, we need nominations for new Committee Members. If we are not able to form a new Committee at the AGM, we will not plan any events for 2021 and will start the process to call an Extraordinary General Meeting to close the Tenterden Society.
So, please telephone Brian Guest, our Membership Secretary (01580 763 423), to put your name forward by 12th September 2020 if you would like to take part in planning the future of the Tenterden Society and running the monthly meetings. Without new volunteers our Society will no longer be able to operate and will be forced to close.
With my very good wishes, and those of your Committee.

Cancellation of Arts Society Events
I am sure you are aware the Government has announced additional steps to delay the spread of the Covid-19 virus (Coronavirus) and it has become clear that further measures will need to be taken to protect the vulnerable and elderly.
The Tenterden Arts Society has a duty of care for your well-being and safety so regrettably, I must inform you that in line with Government recommendations and with advice from our Headquarters we are suspending all Tenterden Arts Society Events and Lectures for the remainder of this half of our 2020 Programme. This takes us to the end of July after which we will review the situation over the summer break in the light of circumstances at that time.
The April, May, June and July Lectures will be cancelled and we are now in the process of attempting to re-schedule them into our 2021Programme. The visits to Greenwich, Charleston and the Wallace Collection have also been cancelled.
I will, together with the Treasurer review our 2021 membership fee in the light of cancellations this year.
This is a difficult time for everyone, I do hope you and your families will remain clear of this virus. I look forward to more encouraging news when the weather is warmer and we can once again gather together to enjoy our programme for the remainder of the year.
We are in uncharted territory, but we will do our very best to keep you up to date as this situation develops.
With very best wishes
Chris Dennis, our Chairman has emailed our members and written to those who do not have email addresses advising that all Lectures and Events up to and including July 2020 have been cancelled. For the transcript of the message please go to our NEWS page.
